Sue and I took the kids up to High Point State Park today. I hadn't been there since I was a girl scout and we visited it one weekend when we were away at camp. Sue had only been once or twice. It was actually a lot of fun!
We drove through the park doing a little sightseeing and made our way up to the monument. We made it to the highest point in the State of NJ and the view was incredible! We looked out on to the hills and valleys of Sussex county and then continued until we were right up next to the monument. We did have the opportunity to climb to the top but the thought of a tiny staircase with two kids in the heat was not my idea of a good time. Nor was it Sue's. Luckily, there was plenty to see down at the base of the monument.
Nicholas enjoyed looking out over the mountains and through the "telescopes" on every side of the base. From one side of the monument you can see Upstate NY, The Pocono mountains and Connecticut. From the other side is all NJ. It's pretty incredible and the weather was perfect!! Nicholas was enthralled by the beach that the park has and that was clearly visible from one side of the monument. We didn't have any swim gear so we had to skip the beach!
After taking tons of pictures and looking from every side of the base of the monument and even venturing inside we headed down to one of the many spots that has playground equipment. The kids enjoyed some playground time and then we headed down the mountain and out of the park for some ice cream!
The best part of the day, after the monument of course, was getting home and having Nicholas and Addison fall fast asleep for the last little bit of the afternoon and early evening!!
